Equipment:
- Eye protection
- Hearing protection
- Gun belt is secure
- Holster must prevent access to, or activation of trigger when gun is holstered
Handgun:
- Verify that handgun is unloaded.
- Semi-Automatic – Functioning safety. Functioning disconnector (cock hammer, move slide back about 1/8”, press trigger, hammer should not fall.
- Revolver – Chambers line up with barrel as cylinder is rotated by pressing trigger. Cylinder does not have excessive fore and aft movement.
- Discuss any equipment that is not in compliance with the rules. Request MD approval to use, if necessary.
Range safety:
- Cold range – Gun can only be loaded when attempting a course of fire under the supervision of a Range Officer (RO). Gun is loaded at “Make ready” command. Gun is unloaded at “Unload and show clear” command. Gun remains unloaded at all other times.
- Safety Areas – May be used for handgun practice, repair, and handling without RO supervision. Dummy ammunition, loaded magazines, loaded speed loading devices, and live rounds are prohibited.
- 180 degree rule – Gun muzzle must always be pointed downrange.
- Fingers must be outside of trigger guard when not engaging targets.
- Unsafe gun handling will result in match disqualification.
Range commands:
- Make ready
- Are you ready
- Standby
- Start signal (beep)
- Stop (if necessary)
- If you are finished, unload and show clear
- If clear, hammer down, holster (If clear, cylinder closed, holster)
- Range is clear
Dry Fire Exercise (using range commands):
- Verify that gun and magazines on belt are unloaded.
- Draw, insert empty magazine, prepare gun, apply safety, holster.
- On start signal, draw, simulate shooting 3 targets with movement between targets and one reload.
- Unload, show clear, hammer down, holster.
Live Fire Exercise (using range commands):
- Load 2 magazines or speed loaders with at least 4 rounds in each.
- Draw, insert magazine, prepare gun, apply safety, holster.
- On start signal, draw, shoot 3 targets with movement between targets and one reload.
- Unload, show clear, hammer down, holster.
