NROI Range Officer course coming to East Huntingdon

East Huntingdon will be hosting a Range Officer certification course this coming January. While you can serve as an RO at a local match without being certified, this class is a great opportunity to learn the rules of USPSA which will help you to improve both as an RO and as a competitor. There are a lot of overlapping rules in USPSA which can seem confusing and intimidating at first but this course is a great way of learning them to the point where you can make good decisions while planning or shooting a stage.

As a personal testimony, one type of scoring that a lot of people fail to understand is Fixed Time. In fact I’ve had to correct a match director in another region when he said that fixed time means, “you can fire as many shots as you want in the limited time,” which isn’t true. In actuality, fixed time is (basically) Virginia count, but with an added time limit. At nationals a few years ago there was a fixed time stage. And while shooting that stage I threw a shot into hardcover which normally would’ve been a (non-penalty) Mike. However, since I knew I wouldn’t make it to all the targets in the time limit, I instinctively fired another shot at the target and made it up with an alpha, gaining five points back without incurring a penalty.

This is obviously a very niche example but there are plenty of other times where I have used knowledge I picked up during my time in the RO class to help myself (and my squadmates) at USPSA matches, and I highly recommend it if you will be free that weekend in January. I especially recommend it if you are a relatively newer shooter in USPSA.
